PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now secured the prestigious cup on fourteen separate occasions.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the match featuring the French league champions and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger opened the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side fired twice in the closing moments to take a shock lead. Initially, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial equaliser in the dying moments to force the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all converted with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the last 13 seasons.
